MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) — The president of a group that supports Wisconsin’s business industry says employers are stymied in the search for skilled workers by failed drug tests.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce Foundation president Jim Morgan said more companies are drug testing potential employees, especially in manufacturing because of safety issues.
Morgan said the long-term concern for a shortage of skilled workers is causing communities like Manitowoc to address the issue. The coordinator of the initiative Healthiest Manitowoc County 2020, Annie Short, said employers are telling her as many as half of potential employees are failing drug tests.
She told the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter it seems to be a vicious circle — some people may be using drugs because they’re depressed about being unemployed. But, they can’t get a job because they can’t pass a drug test.
