Two Dane County committees have approved hiring an architectural firm to design new agricultural and exhibition pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center, where events such as the World Dairy Expo take place on the south edge of Madison.

The Dane County Board’s Personnel and Finance and Public Works and Transportation committees voted this week to award a $745,000 contract for the project to the Madison-based architecture firm Strang Inc. The full County Board is expected to vote on the matter May 2.

Dane County has worked with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection to develop an $18 million plan to replace barns at the Alliant Energy Center with modern pavilions. Under a proposed state budget now being considered by lawmakers, half of the money for that project would come from borrowing supported by the state general fund.
