A construction worker for Madison-based J.H. Findorff & Son Inc. died Monday at the Edgewater Hotel construction site in Madison.
Findorff is the general contractor on the project.
Brian Hornung, Findorff vice president, said an employee died at about 2 p.m. at the site. Hornung would not provide additional details about the worker because the family had not been notified as of Monday afternoon.
Paramedics and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office were on the scene Monday.
Ron Schwenn, a division chief for the Madison Fire Department, said rescue crews were called to the hotel site near the University of Wisconsin campus after receiving reports that a worker had fallen about 20 feet.
Shortly after arriving, they determined the worker, whom Schwenn also declined to name, had died. Schwenn said the Edgewater Hotel, which is on the south shore of Madison’s Lake Mendota, is undergoing a renovation.
Chad Greenwood, assistant area director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Madison office, said Monday his agency had begun an investigation into the incident but had no details about what happened.
Hornung said Findorff is working with OSHA investigators.
“A tragic accident involving a worker at the Edgewater site occurred (Monday) afternoon,” Bob Dunn, developer of The Edgewater, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to worker’s family, friends and co-workers. All of us in The Edgewater family are deeply saddened and extend our sincere condolences to the worker’s family.”
