ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) — Six Chippewa Indian tribes are asking federal environmental regulators to review the proposed iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin.

The tribes say the proposed mine in Ashland and Iron counties would pollute waters downstream to Lake Superior. The Chippewa are asking the Environmental Protection Agency to take a look at potential effects before Gogebic Taconite’s project is reviewed by state regulators and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Wisconsin Public Radio News says tribal officials are asking the EPA to invoke part of the Clean Water Act that stopped a multi-billion dollar mine in Alaska.

The tribes include Red Cliff, Bad River, Lac du Flambeau, St. Croix, Sokoagon and Lac Courte Oreilles.
