2 die when wall collapses in Pepin County (UPDATE)

DURAND, Wis. (AP) — Authorities in western Wisconsin say a trench wall collapsed in Pepin County, killing a man and a 2-year-old boy.

Fifty-six-year-old John Unser and Macin David Olson Finstuen died at a home construction site near the town of Arkansaw on Saturday. Rescue workers used shovels to dig for the victims after a third person who made it out of the trench called for help.

Sheriff’s officials say the trench was about six feet deep. Authorities say it took about an hour to recover the victims.

An Eau Claire Leader-Telegram report says the sheriff’s office responded to a call Saturday about 9:40 a.m.

They and other emergency officials were able to dig the bodies free but they couldn’t revive the victims.
