LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a dump truck driver with causing a fatal crash on Interstate 90 near La Crosse.
The La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday charged 36-year-old Francis Rychtik Sr., of Arpin, with five felonies in the July crash that killed 29-year-old Jason Songer of La Crescent, Minn. They include homicide by the intoxicated use of a vehicle. He’s jailed with cash bond set at $100,000.
Authorities say Rychtik was going 55 mph when he rear-ended Songer’s car. According to the complaint, he told investigators he drank heavily the night before. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.047 percent about three hours after the crash. The legal limit for commercial drivers is 0.04 percent.
Court records don’t list an attorney for Rychtik, who’s due back in court Oct. 16.
