RUMFORD, Maine (AP) — A Canadian company is entering into an agreement to buy a paper mill in Wisconsin.
Catalyst Paper Corp. officials want to buy the mill as part of a $74 million deal to purchase two mills owned by NewPage Corp., according to the Portland Press Herald. One mill is in Rumford, Maine, and the other is in Biron, Wis., according to the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune.
Catalyst representatives said the deal is contingent on the completion of a $1.4 billion merger between NewPage and rival papermaker Verso Paper Corp. That merger is expected by the end of the year.
New Page is based in Miamisburg, Ohio, and has two other paper mills in Wisconsin, according to the company’s website. The mill in Stevens Point employs 239 people, and the one in Wisconsin Rapids has 977 employees, according to the website.
