HERRIN, Ill. (AP) — A Wisconsin investment firm is looking to redevelop the abandoned former Maytag plant in Herrin, Ill.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports Milwaukee-based Phoenix Investors LLC want to convert the vacant industrial property to house tenants by next summer. Phoenix Investors’ representative Frank Crivello says the company is rehabbing the building. He didn’t identify any prospective tenants, citing pending negotiations.
The region lost about 1,000 jobs when the plant closed in 2006. Phoenix recently purchased the 810,000-square-foot site for about $1 million.
Herrin Acting Mayor Steve Frattini says the city will work with the company to remove any barriers to redevelopment.
Herrin is about 15 miles northeast of Carbondale in Williamson County.
