Former treasurer, deputy treasurer charged with felony theft

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — The former Eau Claire County treasurer and his assistant have been charged with felony theft and misconduct in public office.

Prosecutors say Larry Lokken and Kay Onarheim took more than $625,000 in taxpayer money between 2011 and 2013, when both left the office. The two appeared in Eau Claire County Circuit Court by video conference Monday.

WQOW-TV reports District Attorney Gary King asked for bonds of $250,000 each. But, Judge William Gabler set bond for Lokken at $7,500 and $500 for Onarheim. Both must surrender their passports and check in at the county jail daily.

According to a criminal complaint, both have admitted taking money from the county. Court records do not list defense attorneys for the two.
