Badger named to lead merged union council

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A veteran Wisconsin union leader will head the newly merged councils of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Rick Badger has been named executive director of Council 32, which was formed when three Wisconsin AFSCME councils representing state and local government leaders voted to merge earlier this year.

The Council 32 executive board picked another candidate, Boyd McCamish, for the job, but failed to come to terms on a compensation package. Badger served as executive director of AFSCME Council 40, which represented local government employees outside the Milwaukee area, from 2007 until the merger.

The State Journal says Badger is a fourth-generation union member. He served in the Gulf and Iraq wars before retiring from the Army Reserve in 2007.
