MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joy Global Inc. plans to lay off 109 union workers and terminate four non-union employees at the company’s mining equipment factory in Milwaukee.
The company notified the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday that it plans to temporarily close the operating unit, called Original Equipment.
Joy Global expects to begin taking the actions on Nov. 30. The company says it does not know when the operating unit will start up again.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Joy Global, and competitor Caterpillar Inc., have cut hundreds of jobs as the result of a global slowdown in the mining equipment business.
Steelworkers Local 1114, which represents the Milwaukee employees, says the size of the blue-collar workforce at Joy Global is about half what it was three years ago.
