CUDAHY, Wis. (AP) — A suburban Milwaukee trap shooting range along the Lake Michigan shoreline is being forced to shut down amid concern over its environmental impact.

Cudahy Sportsmen’s Club president Tom Ahmad tells WISN-TV that the Milwaukee County Parks system has notified the shooting range, located at Warnimont Park, that its lease won’t be renewed.

Friends of Grant Park notified the county more than two years ago after volunteer cleanup crews kept finding debris from shotgun shells and clay targets on the beach. The group was concerned that the targets were toxic and that lead was getting into Lake Michigan.

Ahmad says the club tried to remedy the problem by switching to steel shot and hosting weekly cleanups.

The club considered new sites for the shooting range but the park system wasn’t interested.
