Car chase following tool theft lands contractor in hospital

A contractor was sent to the hospital Monday after being hit at a job site near Milwaukee’s downtown by a vehicle drive by someone suspected of stealing tools out of a company truck.

The Milwaukee Police Department confirmed they are investigating a suspected theft that occurred around 8:45 a.m. Monday on the 600 block of Milwaukee’s South 2nd Street. A spokesman said the suspect is believed to have taken the man’s tools directly from the vehicle.

Local media reported the contractor hopped into his car and tried to chase down the suspected thief. He got out of his car minutes later and was struck by the sport-utility vehicle he had been chasing.

Milwaukee police were still looking for the suspect Wednesday afternoon.

Thefts from construction sites are far from uncommon. The Madison Police Department, for instance, reported in August that burglars had stolen about $7,000 worth of tools and equipment from a local job site.

The Madison incident happened sometime over a weekend, and workers didn’t report the stolen items until returning to the site the following Monday.
