Toppled Lincoln statue to be repaired

BURLINGTON, Wis. (AP) — A southeastern Wisconsin city official says a statue of Abraham Lincoln that was recently toppled should be ready to go back up in the coming weeks.

Burlington’s Lincoln statue was toppled Saturday. A man has been arrested and was charged Tuesday with felony criminal damage to property.

Jim Bergles, director of the city’s public works department, says there was “no structural damage to Abe Lincoln himself.” He says the statue needs new mounting bolts.

Bergles tells The Journal Times that the statue has been taken to Milwaukee to be repaired by the same company that restored it two years ago. He says repairs will cost roughly $5,000.

Dennis Tully, president of the statue’s caretaker organization, says the damage could have been worse and that they’re fortunate it fell into a pile of snow.
