Natural Resources Board surprised by critical audit

MADISON, Wis. — The chairman of the board that makes policy for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says members were surprised and disappointed by a recent audit that found serious deficiencies in enforcement of water pollution laws.

In his first public comments about the audit, chairman Terry Hilgenberg tells the State Journal (http://bit.ly/25XlBNW ) DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp will be asked to address the criticism at the next Natural Resources Board meeting.

The Legislative Audit Bureau found that over the past decade, the DNR failed 94 percent of the time to take enforcement action against sewage plants and industries that exceeded water pollution limits.

Stepp has said her agency has already taken steps to address the issues raised in the audit. The board meets June 22 in Richland Center.
