Abandoned hospital headache for Baraboo police

BARABOO, Wis. (AP) — Police in Baraboo say an abandoned building with a rich history has become a magnet for trespassers.

The old building, now owned by the state, is a debris field of mold, glass and asbestos. It was once home to the Ringling family of circus fame. It later became St. Mary’s Ringling Hospital before it was converted to a retirement home for Catholic nuns.

Police Chief Mark Schauf tells WISC-TV attempts to prevent access to the building have failed. He says teens have been drinking and doing drugs in the old hospital.

City leaders hope to secure a state grant to finally tear down the building by the end of the year.
