The historic Milwaukee Athletic Club will undergo a $70 million renovation after a joint venture of the Milwaukee developers J. Jeffers & Company and Interstate Development Partners closed on a purchase of the property Thursday.
The developers, along with the Denver-based firm Sage Hospitality, plan a complete renovation of the building’s hotel, including the addition of new dining and entertainment venues and first-floor retail. Work on the project will begin “immediately,” according to a news release. Developers previously said the project is expected to be complete in time for the Democratic National Convention, which Milwaukee is play host to in July 2020.
Other work to the building will include the addition of a new fitness center, rooftop lounge and an overhaul of the athletic club’s basketball court and swimming pool. Sage is a partner in the project and will oversee the project’s aesthetics and operate the hotel, restaurant and event space once the work is complete.
“This building is a one-of-a-kind historic design, which along with the Milwaukee Athletic Club’s iconic history, provides a compelling and exciting challenge to blend history and ageless design with modern amenities, welcoming environments and conveniences,” said Josh Jeffers, president and CEO of J. Jeffers & Company. “We are very excited to get the work underway and move the project forward.”
