In the former home of Bancroft Dairy, the Peloton project consists of 172 total units and retail space. Its proximity to downtown and a shortage of housing in Madison made this project desirable to the development team. Building AB includes six stories of post-tensioned concrete that are cantilevered out at the “prow” of the building, where they meet with a five-story wood-frame building.
Building C is a four-story wood-frame building and Building D a three-story live-work townhome unit.
The building is on one of the most prominent sites in Madison — a pie-shaped lot at the corner of Park Street and Fish Hatchery Road. The nearly zero-lot line project, with thousands of vehicles passing by daily, required a great deal of coordination with the city of Madison Traffic Engineering Department.
The project involved a lengthy value-engineering process that included a major redesign of the structure. A combination of precast and structural steel was switched to post-tension concrete and a floor was added between the fourth and fifth floor units to eliminate lofts and make room for 16 additional units.
The construction and detailing work needed for this building were unlike that used in any other completed nearby. It started with some of the most complicated post-tension concrete framing and rebar Stevens has ever completed.
