As a senior project manager at CG Schmidt, Cody Scherr oversees some of the contractor’s most complex health-care projects.

Scherr has 14 years in the industry and joined CG Schmidt while he was an intern studying at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. From framing houses as a student to working on large commercial projects, Scherr has taken on a huge variety of work in his career.

But he’s especially motivated by health-care projects, which bring their own set of difficulties and rewards.

“Health care construction is challenging,” he said. “There are a lot of infrastructure pieces to a health care building that are more involved.”

Scherr recently oversaw CG Schmidt’s work on Kathy’s House, a 36,000-square-foot guest house at the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus. The project called for the use of much prefabrication. Crews also worked through the pandemic, when strict protocols were in place to slow the spread of the virus.

But Scherr’s role in the project extended beyond its construction. He encouraged his team members to invest their time in supporting Kathy’s House, which provides a caring environment for families who are suffering from an illness or supporting a loved one.

Because COVID-19 rules require the organization to decrease the number of employees on its sites so it could abide by social-distancing rules, CG Schmidt employees volunteered their time after work to prepare meals for guests.

Scherr said the relationships he formed with hospital officials helped the contractor deliver the project on time and on budget.

“What made it successful was spending a lot of time with the owner and understanding their mission and what their expectations were,” he said. “It’s a lot of communication and coordination to make sure you’re delivering the project they are expecting.”
