As Capri Communities looked for a way to extend its services, a green field on Madison’s west side beckoned.

The result is Vista West, a modern senior-living center that offers independent living and assisted living as well as memory-care apartments.

Just as construction was to ramp up, COVID-19 shut everything down. With the extra time, some design adjustments were made. They led to the addition of:

• A bipolar-ionization enhancement to the HVAC system

• A designated family-quarantine visitation room

• An enlarged parcel room for increased deliveries and storage

• More automatic-door operators, touchless faucets and water-bottle stations

AG Architecture’s chief design officer, Eric Harrmann, said, “We were able to stop and make these changes before learning it the hard way.”

Vista West is a mix of studio apartments and one-bedroom units with kitchenettes. The building wraps around the back of its site to provide a private courtyard. Its main outdoor area has dining spots, a firepit, outdoor kitchens and a pergola overlooking fountains. An adjoining courtyard has a raised-bed garden, a shed and potting bench, a gazebo and walkways for exercise. A rooftop area, “The Capitol Club,” offers a view of the Wisconsin Capitol.

The interior evokes a Northwoods lodge with its wood tones, mixed metals, stone and tiling. Art, antique mirror details and decorative screens reinforce the resort theme.

In the end, the contractor, owner and architect collaborated to solve problems and modify plans to adhere to ensure the project was building according to plan and on schedule and budget.

Harrmann said, “I think the most rewarding piece was working with the City of Madison and the neighbors to be able to build a project everyone was happy with — more than happy, they were excited.

“Madison is a community that’s involved in their surroundings and cares a lot about the structures being built around it, so being able to make those presentations and have a group of neighbors that was very strongly in favor of the project was a pleasant surprise.”
