BUILDING BLOCKS: Milwaukee Fortress

The Fortress dates to 1892 and was added onto up until 1912. It was initially used as a shoe factory by F. Mayer Boot and Shoe Company, which at one time produced as many as 9,000 shoes there a day. It later became a tannery. Its last year as a shoe factory was 1938. After that, it was used for a variety of purposes, including a daycare and Montessori school.

BUILDING BLOCKS: Nicholas Recreation Center at UW-Madison

The Nicholas Recreation Center – the “Nick” for short – is being built as a replacement of UW-Madison campus’ 170,145-square-foot Southeast Recreational Facility, which was demolished in fall 2017. That former building, which was nearly 35 years old, tended to get crowded at certain times of the day, had a swimming pool that wasn’t big enough for swim meets and had structural flaws like a leaky roof.
