BUILDING BLOCKS: Nicholas Recreation Center at UW-Madison (access required)

The Nicholas Recreation Center – the “Nick” for short – is being built as a replacement of UW-Madison campus’ 170,145-square-foot Southeast Recreational Facility, which was demolished in fall 2017. That former building, which was nearly 35 years old, tended to get crowded at certain times of the day, had a swimming pool that wasn’t big enough for swim meets and had structural flaws like a leaky roof.

BUILDING BLOCKS: Waukesha County Courthouse Addition (access required)

The Waukesha County Courthouse was built in 1959 and has undergone renovations and expansions over the years, bringing its total size to 150,000 square feet. A prisoner transport tunnel was installed in 2010 to allow for the safer movement of prisoners to and from the jail and the courtrooms. Even so, many things about the building remain outdated.
