Milwaukee’s first mass timber building uses treated lumber, not steel, for its frame

When the developer Ann Pieper Eisenbrown decided to use specially treated lumber, instead of steel and concrete, for her new apartment building in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neighborhood, she was mostly thinking about the environment.

The project will be the product of collaboration among the Milwaukee School of Engineering, We Energies, Rockwell Automation and American Family Insurance. The center is meant to be a place where K-12 students can receive instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – collectively known as the STEM subjects.

Northwestern, Freshwater a contrast in meeting hiring goals

Members of Milwaukee's Common Council were offered a study in contrasts on Tuesday: The construction team working on the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons continue to meet the city's resident-hiring and contracting goal for the massive project. Meanwhile, south of Interstate 94, the group behind a much smaller Freshwater Plaza Apartments project is falling short.
