Building bloodline: Cullen family continuing long-standing tradition

J.P. Cullen started in 1892 in Janesville and was originally called Cullen Brothers. Later known as J.P. Cullen & Son, it was that incarnation of the company that began construction of Janesville High School in 1921. The company went on to build the city’s library, several public schools, First National Bank, Gazette Printing Co. and Trinity Episcopal Church, among other structures. With offices in Milwaukee and Madison, the 125-year-old company still has its headquarters in Janesville. Pictured are Mark Cullen, J.P. Cullen’s great-grandson and current chairman of J.P. Out of 600 employees, there are seven members of the Cullen family working at J.P. Cullen & Sons. Their ties to the company stretch back five generations, when first-generation Irish-American and carpenter John Patrick Cullen started building homes in Janesville in 1892.
