As Alliant Energy marks the start of work on a new power plant in Beloit, some industry representatives are saying that a decision to let non-union contractors compete for the project produced savings even before shovels hit the ground.

The project involves the construction of a gas-fired power plant capable of producing 700 megawatts of energy for Alliant Energy customers. Coupled with a nearby solar field, the project will be able to power more than 535,000 homes.
