Dubuque, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is moving up plans to install more median cable barriers along the interstate system.
The Iowa Transportation Commission on Tuesday approved an amendment to a 5-year improvement program to accelerate the installation during the next construction season.
The commission, meeting in Dubuque, added 90 miles of barriers along interstates 35, 80 and 380 in six projects at a total cost of $5.8 million.
Iowa has been installing the barriers for several years, and expanded the program in 2007 after a winter storm. The commission has now accelerated the program after a rash of median crossover accidents.
