State’s unemployment improves to 7.3 percent

Madison (AP) — Wisconsin’s rate showed slight improvement last month, dipping to 7.3 percent even while national unemployment nudged upward to 9.0 percent.

The state released its seasonally adjusted numbers for April on Thursday. The figures show that Wisconsin’s unemployment rate slightly is better than the 7.4 percent rate in March, and markedly better than the 8.8 percent figure from April of last year.

The national unemployment rate was 9.0 percent, which is an increase from 8.8 percent the previous month but an improvement from 9.8 percent a year ago.

State figures show that the private sector added a net of 3,000 last month, including 2,800 manufacturing jobs. The state lost 1,700 construction jobs.
