Milwaukee’s work to convert an aging roadway to a more urban design could cost the city a few thousand more than estimated.

The project to rebuild a section of North 124th Street between West Brown Deer and West County Line roads started last week. Milwaukee and Menomonee Falls share jurisdiction of the roadway, and are splitting the project cost.

The initial cost-sharing agreement between the city and the village put the estimated project cost at $800,000. Inc., Milwaukee,  made the low and contract-winning bid of $992,219.37.

Now that final designs and plans are finished and bids are in, the project budget, which includes the potential for cost overruns, has been set at $1.2 million, or $600,000 per municipality. That amount was approved by a city committee Thursday and will be up for Common Council approval Tuesday.
