Committee votes unanimously not to override Walker veto for speed limit signs

Listen to this articleMADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Legislature’s budget committee has voted unanimously not to override Gov. Scott Walker’s decision to employ a rarely used veto power to block a $3 million fund transfer.
Walker on Aug. 6 vetoed a decision by the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee approving $15.8 million in spending by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to pay for installing 70 mph speed limit signs, road salt and a variety of other maintenance needs.
Walker disagreed with tapping $3 million from a county maintenance fund.
State law requires when spending of this sort is vetoed, the committee must attempt an override.
The committee voted 16-0 not to override.
Walker’s veto of the committee action is the first of its kind since 2004, and the budget committee has not overridden such a veto since 2003.
