At one time, it appeared that the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Union’s days were numbered.
UWM had plans to tear down the existing union and build a new $250 million facility. But those plans were upended after the students rejected the initiative in a vote.
So, on to plan No. 2: renovate the existing union at a much cheaper cost of $40 million. Enter HGA, which took on the challenge of giving the 68-year-old facility a modern look.
The process was not an easy one. The existing union was a dark, almost windowless building and lacked any engaging social and study spaces for students. Navigating the building was an issue too: getting through the main level required multiple zig-zag turns.
Unifying the spaces required creative thinking, prioritization and an authentic engagement process. HGA met with various stakeholders throughout the project’s life to discuss design priorities, finishes, paint color, locations of casework and furniture selections.
The renovated union — which was completed in October 2023 — brings a new look to the 350,000-square-foot building at the heart of campus.
“The renovation streamlines building circulation, making it easier to navigate so students can access resources, activities and services without confusion and anxiety,” said Kailey DuFrane, marketing assistant at HGA. “The union concourse was radically transformed by removing brick and concrete to install new south windows, allowing generous daylight and views for the first time.
“A clear circulation path cuts through the existing vacant area allowing new seating and study areas for students with stairs connecting to the campus level.”
