The Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation wants to build a housing development on 32 acres of land in Plymouth.
Details on development scope will be finalized over the next several months as the SCEDC and the city of Plymouth work together, nonprofit officials said. The SCEDC requested rezoning for the land, and construction is expected to start in late 2025 or early 2026, officials added.
This will be the third subdivision brought by the SCEDC Housing Initiative funded by the Forward Fund, which the nonprofit launched to boost home ownership in the county, officials said. Companies that donated to the fund include Johnsonville, Kohler Co., Masters Gallery Foods, Inc. and Sargento, officials added.
“The SCEDC is committed to helping both our communities and companies grow,” said Brian Doudna, executive director of the SCEDC, in a statement.
“The Forward Fund is designed to address some of the barriers in the current housing market that started during the Great Recession,” Doudna said. “Sheboygan County simply needs more single-family housing units that are available and affordable to area residents seeking to purchase a home and also attract new working families who want to work and live here,” he added.
Sheboygan County also used $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to advance the housing program, officials noted.
The first project using support from the Forward Fund is Founders’ Pointe, a 54-home subdivision in Sheboygan Falls. Construction of Founders’ Pointe started in May 2023, and construction of the SCEDC’s second development, the Founders’ Pointe Neighborhood, will start in the fall.
The 32-acre site will feature single-family homes and may include a lot for other housing options made available to third-party developers, officials said. The Forward Fund dollars can only be used for development of entry-level single-family homes, officials added.
