THE BLUEPRINT:
A first-of-its-kind subdivision dedicated to affordable housing is underway in Racine.
Habitat for Humanity of Racine and Kenosha Counties in early August broke ground on Herrick Village, a multi-home development with 12 houses on the southeast corner of South Memorial Drive and 10th Street.
Construction on walls for the first two homes started through the 2025 Women Build Week which started Aug. 4, said Rex Hamilton, the director of development for Habitat for Humanity of Racine and Kenosha Counties. Digging for the first two foundations is scheduled for late September.
The total investment is $3 million, including infrastructure, with a three-year timeline, Hamilton said. Each home will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a single car garage.
The construction team includes CNH Industrial and Realistic Builders, Hamilton noted. The development will target families who make 30% to 80% of the area’s median income.
In 2023, the area median income in Racine County was $73,978, data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed.
“For several years, we have dreamed of building a development dedicated to providing families with affordable homeownership opportunities,” Habitat said in a statement.
Each house will be sold to partner families at an affordable cost to serve as a hand-up to low-income families, officials added.
