Construction will soon start on Interstate 794 between the Marquette and Lake interchanges in Milwaukee.
Gov. Tony Evers approved a $9.6 million contract with Littleton, Colorado-based American Civil Constructors to make different improvements to the bridge structures along I-794. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation controls the nearly one-mile project, which is scheduled to begin the week of May 4.
WisDOT officials said the project is unrelated to the I-794 Lake Interchange Study. In the study, the department is considering several options to change or maintain the freeway, including full removal. It will be decided in 2027.
Back to the improvement project, construction crews will resurface the concrete on different bridges along I-794, repair parapet walls and repair concrete on approach slabs. They will also make new pavement markings.
The project is expected to be completed over the course of two construction seasons; eastbound structures will be completed in 2026, and then the westbound structures will be finished in 2027. Work will pause during winter.
Most of the project will be completed during overnight hours, WisDOT officials said. There will be different lane, ramp and directional closures.
Like all Wisconsin road work, the project timeline will depend on weather conditions.
