MILWAUKEE (AP) — The U.S. has rejected Milwaukee’s request for additional federal money to expand a proposed downtown system.

The city applied for up to $26.6 million in federal transit grant money.

This week, the federal agency announced awards nationwide totaling $474 million. Milwaukee did not get any money.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the city had hoped to use the federal money to expand its proposed $64.6 million downtown streetcar system. The city hopes to start construction on the system next year and have streetcars running in 2016.
