Milwaukee-based Barrett Lo Visionary Development paid $3.3 million for the former Boston Store property at Southridge Mall ahead of a mixed-use redevelopment project in Greendale.
The developer on Thursday bought 14.8 acres at 5300 S. 76th St. from the village, records from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue showed. In 2021, The village of Greendale bought the parcel for $3.3 million in hopes of redevelopment.
Bon-Ton Stores Inc., the operator of Boston Store, went bankrupt in 2018.
In June 2025, village officials took steps approving a development plan to raze the store and build four buildings in multiple phases on the west side of the Southridge Mall.
Barrett Lo Visionary Development is planning a $100 million project with around 740 apartments and 20,000 square feet of retail space. The development is called Verdell on the Green, according to architect and project partner KTGY.
Meanwhile, the project team has been working through long-standing building rules with Southridge Mall’s owners and other hurdles such as utilities and codes. The Boston Store is on the exterior wall of the Southridge Mall and sits on a property line. Barrett Lo will need to demolish the store, relocate utilities and create infrastructure for the building pad locations.
In 2021, the village approved a proposal from Barrett Lo for a “mixed-use development that will bring upscale market-rate apartment options for residents, modern retail amenities and significant new tax base to the community,” according to the village.
