The has picked to serve as construction manager on a new $100 million research center.

The college announced plans in 2019 for the construction of a 150,000-square-foot Cancer Research Center, which would allow the health care provider to centralize its cancer research operations and hire as many as 50 research scientists. It picked Mortenson to oversee the project after selecting New York-based CannonDesign as the project architect in September. The two companies recently worked together on the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin’s expansion of its Center for Advanced Care on its Milwaukee campus.

The Medical College of Wisconsin hasn’t specified a location for the new cancer research center or a timeline for construction, according to a spokesperson. The project’s design phase began last fall and will continue into this year. Money for the work has been secured by a bond issuance. The state also contributed $10 million to the project in its 2019-2021 biennial budget.

“The new Cancer Research Building will enable our scientists and physicians to accelerate discoveries that will help eradicate the cancer burden in Wisconsin,” said Joseph Kerschner, provost and executive vice president of the Medical College of Wisconsin and dean of the college’s school of medicine. “Mortenson shares our vision of developing and building a space that will have significant, positive impact on the advancement and availability of cutting-edge cancer treatments for all people in our community.”
