Vertical construction of a public nature and culture museum has wrapped up in Milwaukee.

Crews on Tuesday lifted the final beam in place at the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin, a $240 million, five-story public museum at Sixth and McKinley. Museum officials said the project is on track to open in early 2027. The structure will replace the public museum building at 800 W. Wells St.

Guests took turns signing the final steel beam before a crane lifted it onto the fifth story. The structure stands 100 feet and crews will shift to installing precast exterior panels and finishing the nearby parking structure.

As workers were about to grab the beam, the long piece of steel slipped from its hoist and dropped a few feet onto the museum deck with a thud. No one was injured, and the piece was installed successfully.
