Listen to this articleMedia on Monday got a preview of the $456 million, 1.3 million-square-foot Baird Center expansion, days ahead of the ceremonial ribbon cutting and public opening.
The project, headed by Gilbane Building Co. and C.D. Smith Construction, doubled the size of the existing convention center with a new 31,928-square-foot ballroom, 300,000-square-foot exhibit hall, parking garage and Baird Sky View Terrace. Officials will host a ribbon-cutting with dignitaries on Thursday and will follow up with a public open house on Saturday.
Since the project broke ground in October 2021, crews have driven 2,741 piles, used 5,850 tons of steel and poured 48,000 cubic yards of concrete, officials said. The project used 2,359 workers on-site and clocked 1.4 million work hours. Project planning started in June 2019.
