Mayo Clinic is planning to build a six-story hospital in La Crosse as part of a project to improve the health system’s campuses in three states.
The health system announced on Tuesday it would embark on a $353 million project to build replacements of existing hospitals in both La Crosse and Mankato, Minnesota.
The plans call for putting up a 70-bed hospital on a site now used for parking next to Mayo’s Cancer and Surgery building in La Crosse. Mayo would also add 121 beds in a three-story expansion of its hospital in Mankato. Work on both projects is expected to begin by by the end of the year and wrap up in 2024. The health system hasn’t yet chosen a general contractor or other contractors for the project.
The new La Crosse building would house various functions, including a new family birth center, medical and surgical units, an intensive-care unit and unfinished space to accommodate future expansions. The project would also incorporate new technology, such as telehealth, digital health and artificial intelligence systems, along with design elements to improve patient and staff experiences.

Beyond its work in Minnesota and La Crosse, Mayo is also moving forward with a $432 million expansion of its hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, a project that’s expected to wrap up in 2026.
