The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee‘s new is redefining in Wisconsin.

The 163,400-square-foot, $90 million facility prepares more than 3,500 students annually for careers in medicine, engineering, toxicology, nanoscience and other fast-growing fields.

The four-story building replaces an aging facility and integrates state-of-the-art laboratories, modular classrooms, lecture halls, offices and collaborative spaces. A custom glazing system creates a woven exterior appearance, while a braided floor plan encourages informal learning and student engagement outside the classroom.

The project also included a major central utility expansion, essential for the building’s operation and future campus growth. Since generates its own power, crews worked closely with campus faculty to upgrade infrastructure while minimizing disruption to active facilities.

Challenges included the complexity of the enclosure system and coordinating precise construction tolerances. Proactive field verification and strong collaboration between trades allowed the team to successfully maintain construction efficiency and meet design expectations.

Safety was a top priority, with VJS implementing its “See It, Own It, Share It” initiative and launching a “Back to Basics” campaign to emphasize core safety practices.

The Chemistry Building stands out for its innovative “science on display” design, connecting teaching and research spaces with transparent glass walls and natural lighting. Specialized spaces such as the Kilo Laboratory for industrial chemistry and an outreach lab for K-12 education underscore its broad impact.

Beyond the campus, the building strengthens Wisconsin’s chemical industry, the state’s fifth-largest manufacturing sector, by developing a skilled workforce that drives economic growth. Through visionary design, careful execution and a commitment to community engagement, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s new Chemistry Building sets a benchmark for scientific education and regional advancement.
