A resurfacing and improvement construction project for a highway corridor and the Hale Interchange in Milwaukee County will start this week.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced that Gov. Tony Evers approved a multi-year, $22.3 million contract with Waukesha-based Zenith Tech Inc. to work on Interstates 41, 43 and 894 between Lincoln Avenue and 84th Street in Milwaukee County. Work was scheduled to begin May 27.
Road crews will resurface the entire corridor and repair 17 bridges within the Hale Interchange, WisDOT officials said. Crews will also work on concrete base patching, repair the Hales Corners Park and Ride lot, reapply high friction surface treatment to interchange curves and replace guardrails, officials added.
Additionally, the project will feature new curb ramps to meet ADA standards, signal and light upgrades and ramp improvements.
Depending on weather, interchange work is expected to be completed in late 2026.
WisDOT will keep two-way traffic along I-41/43/894 open during the construction project. Most of the resurfacing work will be done during overnight hours, officials said.
There will be long-term system ramp closures in the Hale Interchange as crews work on bridges.
Full freeway, lane and ramp closures are expected to happen overnight, officials said. There will also be extended weekend, full freeway and system ramp closures, officials added.
The Hales Corner Park and Ride lot will remain open for partial use, as well as the Milwaukee County Transit System Route 55 stop inside the lot, officials noted.
WisDOT officials said they will maintain access to local businesses and residences.
