Wisconsin in March can be unpredictable between heavy snowfall and 70-degree days, but the state transportation department anticipates continuing some heavy road projects after experiencing the brunt of winter.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook was announced for southeast, east central and south-central Wisconsin starting Thursday and continuing through the weekend for gusty winds, rain and show expected north of Madison and Milwaukee, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologists are confident in significant, accumulating snow and blowing snow Saturday night through Sunday night, but are not sure yet where the heaviest snow will fall. Some outlets reported Milwaukee could get up to a foot of snow over the weekend.
The weather event was announced shortly after Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials said work would start again on road projects in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties.
Construction work was paused over the winter months, which is standard for certain projects, a spokesperson for WisDOT said. However, work on Interstate 41 and Wisconsin Highway 24 in Milwaukee County and Wisconsin Highway 59 in Waukesha County is expected to resume soon.
Here are some of the road projects WisDOT is looking to continue after a long winter.
Work along I-41 between Burleigh Street and Good Hope Road in Milwaukee County was scheduled to start on March 13 after a pause, WisDOT officials announced on Tuesday.
Work included pavement resurfacing, pavement rehabilitation on different ramps, structure improvements to multiple bridges and storm sewer improvements.
Waukesha-based Zignego Co., Inc. started work on the $29 million contract in September 2025.
Work on WIS 59/US 18, also known as Les Paul Parkway, between Sunset Drive and Arcadian Drive in Waukesha County is expected to continue the week of March 16, transportation officials said.
Work will include replacement of pavement of southbound lanes, traffic flow improvements, improvements at multiple intersections, repairs to guardrails and replacement of the storm sewer system.
Construction began in May 2025 and is scheduled for completion in late fall 2026, depending on weather conditions.
Waukesha-based Musson Brothers, Inc. is the prime contractor for the $23.9 million project, officials added.
Work along WIS 24, or Forest Home Avenue, between 45th Street and Janesville Road in Milwaukee County is expected to start again the week of March 16, WisDOT officials said.
Construction between 45th Street and Howard Avenue is substantially complete with minor lighting and restoration work remaining, officials said.
Crews will continue work between Howard Avenue and Janesville Road, including roadway resurfacing, guardrail improvements, improvements to different intersections and new pavement marking.
Construction began in late March 2025 and is expected to be completed in summer 2026. Racine-based A.W. Oakes & Son is the prime contractor for the $13.8 million contract.
