The Center for Black Excellence & Culture is a 37,000-square-foot, three-level cultural and community landmark in Madison, Wisconsin, completed at a cost of $32 million through contributions from more than 1,300 donors. Rooted in the “Black Aesthetic,” the facility’s bold angular geometry, integrated African Adinkra symbols, and copper accents presented significant construction challenges, including complex wall and ceiling angles, two-story atriums, and monumental staircases requiring innovative access strategies to eliminate mid-landing support posts.
Builder Findorff navigated difficult sloped topography along an active street and bus route, coordinating a design-build MEP approach to conceal infrastructure within tight soffits while meeting rigorous acoustic specifications across multiple program spaces. Drone-based topography was deployed post-excavation to precisely quantify soil volumes, reducing rework and improving grading accuracy. Articulated boom lifts replaced traditional scaffolding both along the variable exterior grade and within interior atriums, supporting worker safety throughout.
The completed facility houses a 280-seat performance theater, professional recording studio, youth leadership suite, Women’s Empowerment Center, and entrepreneurial coworking spaces. JLA Architects led design, with GRAEF providing engineering support and Huffman Keel serving as owner’s representative. The Center is projected to annually serve 2,000 students, 5,000 arts attendees, 250 seniors, and 175 leadership program participants.
