Power plant operator settles permit lawsuit

Dairyland Power Cooperative agreed to pay $50,000 to settle an environmental stemming from work done without a permit at its Algoma station last year.

The LaCrosse-based cooperative operates a number of that serve 16 communities in the upper Midwest.

In 2009, Dairyland shut down an auxiliary boiler for maintenance. As a backup, Dairyland installed and operated a temporary boiler for six hours. Dairyland failed to notify the Department of Natural Resources as required by state law. The temporary boiler should not have been operated without a DNR permit.

The settlement was approved by Buffalo County Circuit Court Judge James J. Duvall.

The Wisconsin brought the suit on behalf of the . In a prepared statement, the DOJ said that while no human health or environmental harm was done, the permits are required as an effort to prevent air pollution.
