Ever since she was in middle school, Laura Rudolph knew she wanted to pursue a career in either architecture or engineering.

“In college, I narrowed my focus to mechanical and electrical engineering. I had a few engineering internships during college, but found that I preferred to interact more closely with construction site/teams,” Rudolph said.

Today, Rudolph is a senior mechanical, electrical and plumbing project manager at Mortenson. She is often an indispensable resource on complex design and construction projects. Her knowledge and specialized expertise in MEP systems has made her as a central member of Mortenson’s teams.

“Paired with her positive attitude and excellent communication skills, she is requested by owners and architectural partners alike,” said Lauren Giannini, marketing coordinator for Mortenson. “She is responsible for providing overall direction and leadership on heavy MEP projects and for MEP scopes of work including the management of project quality, timeliness and safety. As she often brings a unique perspective to planning and execution, Laura also serves as a mentor to Mortenson’s project teams. “

Rudolph said she has grown accustomed to working in a field that typically employs more men than women. “On a typical day, I feel like a member of the team and don’t give it another thought,” she said.

Rudolph has worked on many complex projects in Wisconsin and throughout the country, including the new $221 million Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as various Electronic Fulfillment Centers for Kohl’s. She is now overseeing Northwestern Mutual data-center renovation projects in Milwaukee and Franklin.

One of the biggest difficulties of being a woman in construction is finding a way to balance work and family life, she said.

“I try to be mindful of the time I’m giving to both; I want to be successful at work and satisfied with the time I’m giving my family.”
