The Journey21 Enrichment Center in Oconomowoc is designed for people of all abilities to enjoy programs, learning academies, outings, events and social gatherings.
The 10,000-square-foot center includes a large multipurpose room, fitness center, art room, music room, technology lab, teaching kitchen, a cafe, conference room and flexible space for events that open onto a patio with a fireplace.
Matt Magill, senior project manager with VJS Construction Services, said executing the project involved a notable level of complexity and required seamless cooperation among multiple teams. He said the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems were delivered using the design-build method, while the civil, architectural and structural systems were fully designed.
The building’s interior includes numerous design features to make it comfortable for young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. For example, a soothing color palette prioritizing blues, greens and muted hues were used and lighting levels were evaluated throughout the space; no fluorescent lights were used. The team also paid close attention to its texture choices to help individuals with sensory disorders and used an easy-to-navigate layout with wayfaring signs that do not require the ability to read.
Magill said the project has a profound impact not only on the people using the building but the entire community.
“I enjoyed being able to help create a development that provides young adults who have intellectual or developmental disabilities with a nurturing environment and community to foster their growth,” he said. “This enables them to become self-sufficient individuals who actively contribute to their communities.”
