Located in Milwaukee’s emerging Harbor District, R1VER is a mixed-use development that is built for the future.
The development — situated on a prominent bend of the Kinnickinnic River — consists of office space, apartments and a restaurant, The Bridgewater Modern Grill. It also features retail and cafe space for lease, a large greenspace and more than 1,000 feet of public riverwalk.
The multiple boat slips on site to allow easy access to the city’s waterways and Lake Michigan.
The project is built on top of a two-story plinth with a green roof that houses nearly 1,000 parking stalls. It is structured for additional buildings to be added on top of the plinth that will further strengthen the mixed-use campus, including a hotel and another office or residential building.
Construction on the project was led by Gilbane Building Co. Andrew Roy, lead superintendent for Gilbane, called R1VER “a shining beacon of sustainability in the Harbor District, which will hopefully serve as a spark for further development in this area.”
Michelle Herro, director of real estate finance and project management for Becher Development, which developed and leases R1VER, said the project, “taught the lesson of believing in the design and destination potential of a place with great location and natural amenities, but little investment surrounding it.
“The apartments and restaurant have been highly successful. R1VER now serves as a gateway from the interstate freeway exit to the Bay View neighborhood along the recently reconstructed Becher Street corridor,” Herro said.
