Mavid Construction was founded in 2008 by Zoar Fulwilder and his uncle — in the middle of a recession.

“I remember my parents, particularly my mom, thinking it was insane to start a construction company,” said Fulwilder, the company’s managing partner.

The Native American-owned commercial-interiors subcontracting company got its start in Arizona before relocating to Green Bay, Wis., with the help of a partnership with H.J. Martin & Son. The company self-performs on all projects and has capabilities throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest.

Mavid has received the Minority Business Development State Contract Award twice since 2012, recognizing it as one of the top minority business contractors in Wisconsin. Its portfolio includes projects at Lambeau Field, St. Croix Casino Hertel and the Green Valley Elder Village housing project in Oneida.

The company also completed drywall and insulation work at several tribal clinics, including the Lac Vieux Desert Health Center in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

“When those opened, that kind of made me misty-eyed because of the experience I had growing up on the reservation, going to tribal clinics that were less than adequate,” Fulwilder said in a 2018 Daily Reporter interview. “Just to see that evolution and be part of that was fulfilling for me.”
