The Verona Area School District in Dane County encompasses 57 square miles of rolling hills, farmland and a rapidly growing housing market. Dane County is also one of the fastest growing counties in the state, and the district has added more than 1,500 students within the past 20 years.
After a successful referendum in 2015 to acquire additional land, the district hired Findorff as its construction manager. Over the course of two years, the district, Findorff and Eppstein Uhen Architects worked on building plans to accommodate projected future growth. Throughout the design of the project, Findorff provided pre-construction estimating and communications services and planning for capital maintenance. This work greatly influenced the proposal that was brought to voters in a referendum in April 2017.
Construction began a year later on the new Verona Area High School. The district and project team’s goal was to build a modern and adaptable school that the public could benefit from for generations. The high school occupies 7 acres with four levels and 670 rooms. The center of the building has three stories and surrounds a large atrium with seating for 1,000.
Additional educational and athletic spaces on the campus include a performing-arts center, complete with various theater production and back-of-house support. In addition, the school’s indoor athletic accommodations include an aquatic center with two pools and a diving well, a fieldhouse with a 160-meter indoor track, various gym spaces, health classrooms and locker rooms.
