Jen Froh was working as an administrative assistant for the Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership and completing her bachelor’s degree at UWM, contemplating what her future would look like, when WRTP introduced her to trade unions and manufacturing jobs.
“I began to look at these options and spotted the ironworkers. I was immediately drawn to the images and idea of welding, being outside and being high in the sky. I began the application process and was on the waiting list for Ironworkers Local 8,” she said.
Nearly a decade later, Froh has worked on projects such as the Hoan Bridge, Northwestern Mutual tower, BMO Tower and Children’s Wisconsin. Despite some cold weather conditions, she said she enjoys the physical work, camaraderie and variety of projects.
“At the end of the day, when I have repaired or fabricated something, I feel an incredible sense of pride.”
Charlie Falkner, business manager and treasurer at Ironworkers Local 8, said Froh’s genuine care and concern for others working on her projects stand out.
“She isn’t partial to ironworkers either. Anyone she sees that may be struggling on or off the project, she takes time to listen to them and help them out,” he said.
Froh often volunteers at career fairs throughout Ironworkers Local 8’s jurisdiction, helping to encourage women and minorities to join the union. She said she appreciates the opportunity to share the rewarding career path she has chosen.
“Not everyone finds their path through a degree from a university. I encourage everyone to reflect on what their life goals are, and contemplate the need for purpose and what that looks like,” she said. “I believe our world can be ruthless in the ways of discrimination, but with perseverance and the desire to succeed we can and will overcome.”
